Ashley: Hey, today, we’re talking about storm survival. How to survive a storm in your life. You don’t want to miss this. If you’re going through a storm or you know someone who’s going through a storm, keep watching.

Ashley: Hello, and welcome to Abundant Life. My name is Ashley Terradez. This is my wife, Carlie, and we’re so glad you’ve joined us today. We’ve got a program today talking about how to survive a storm. Storm survival. If you’re going through a challenge, if you’re going through a storm in your life, we’re talking about how to survive that storm. In fact, we’re talking about how to come out the other end of that storm better than when you came into it. Praise God. So what are we up to, Carlie?
Carlie: Amen. We’re going to be talking about a number of things and we’ve talked about where storms come from. The fact that storms do not come from the Lord. He is not the author of our storms, but He sure is the deliverer of our storms. We’ve talked about the importance of choosing to set our heart, keep our heart set upon the Lord because that’s where we’re kept in perfect peace and building a foundation in the word of God, in our relationship with the Lord who is the source of our peace, the source of our comfort, the source of our victory before the storm even comes. And we’ve talked about the importance of fixing our eyes on Jesus and seeing the deliverance of God, seeing ourselves as victorious, seeing ourselves as being already on the other side of the storm and the power of that and how that picture on the inside of us affects our circumstances on the outside of us because as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. But today we’re going to talk about another secret of storm survival, and that is speaking the truth only. The words of our mouth, the confession of our lips will lead us into victory or defeat. We get to determine the path ahead and how things pan out but a large part of that is what comes out of our mouth, isn’t it?
Ashley: It’s important. When you’re going through a storm, one of the temptations is just to spew out everything you’re through and woe with me and start to declare and decree in all that stuff you’re going through. And where there’s a place to vent and there’s a place to share with friends and things, the main thing is we need to change that picture. We need to change what we’re decreeing with our mouth because death and life in the power of the tongue. Your words are powerful. Now, I know some people watching may say, “Ashley, I don’t believe in all that name it, claim it, blab it, grab it stuff. I don’t believe in all that.” Well, that’s the extreme version of the power of your words and we don’t agree with a lot of that either, but there’s definitely power in your words.
Jesus showed us this many times through the gospels. There is power in your words, and what we say with our mouth is so important. So when you’re going through a storm, one of the secrets to survive in that storm is being careful what you say. Put a guard over your mouth and be careful what you decree because what you say with your mouth is very, very important. And I say death and life in the power of the tongue, and you’re going to eat the fruit of your words. So how do we change our vocabulary or change what we decree when it comes to weathering a storm?
Carlie: Well, first of all, we have to know what the word says about our situation. We have to know that the victory of our storm has already been determined. It says in First John that we are overcomers but we are world overcomers through faith because of what Jesus has already done. He has made us victorious in every circumstance of life. There is no storm that’s set against us that God hasn’t already given us the victory over. Now, sometimes it might not look like that. It might not look like we can win. The circumstances may look completely impossible. We’ve been following the path here, the story here through this series of King Jehoshaphat in Second Chronicles, chapter 20. And one of the things that Jehoshaphat did was he spoke to the people what the Lord had shown him. So he spent time with the Lord. He set his heart to seek the Lord. He fixed his eyes on the Lord and he listened to what the Lord has spoken to him and then he spoke out the victory to his people.
And this is really important. He says, “Take your positions, stand and observe the deliverance of the Lord for you, O, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not fear or be filled with terror. Tomorrow, you will go out before them, and the Lord will be with you. And they rose up early in the morning,” and it says, this is him instructing his people, “Listen to me, Judah and those dwelling in Jerusalem. Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be supported. Believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.” And then he sent the praise team out, right? And so they started declaring and singing and praising God for the victory when they were still in the middle of a battle, when it still looked desperate, right?
Ashley: Yeah. And we talked about this. The power of praising and giving thanks to God even when you’re in the middle of the storm. In fact, the most powerful time you can worship God and give thanks to God is when you least feel like it, is when your circumstances least look like you should be praising God, when everything’s going wrong, if you like, in your life, it’s important to look through the natural, look into the spirit and start praising and thanking God. I’ve done it a number of times. There have been times in my life when it looks like my business is going under, it looks like we’re going broke and I forced myself to praise the Lord. I forced myself to give thanks to God. And I’ll start saying thank you Lord for saving me. Thank you Lord for Jesus. Thank you Lord for heaven. Thank you Lord for my health. Thank you Lord for my family.
And after a little while it primes that pump and I start getting thankful and what happens is I devalue the problem and the problem gets decreased and I start magnifying God and making God bigger in my life. And whatever the problem is, whether it’s sickness, whether it’s relational, whatever the problem is, you can do that. You’ve got the power to praise God. And that’s what they did here. They put the praises out first. They started praising God before they even saw the victory. It takes faith to do that. But I’m telling you, when we do that, it’s powerful because we’re saying, Lord, we trust in you. We trust that you’ve already paid the price for our victory. We trust that you’re going to bring us through this. We trust that we have the victory and we’re thanking you for it even before we see it.
Carlie: Amen. Amen. We can start thanking God for the victory before we even see it. That’s awesome. I want to look at something. This is Job 22:28. It says, “You will decree a thing and it will be established for you.” We need to understand that we have power in our words. As Ashley was saying, life and death are in the power of the tongue. We can start declaring the end from the beginning. Isaiah 46:10 actually says, “Declare the end from the beginning.” And the temptation for Jehoshaphat in this situation would be to go back to his advisers or the people closest to him and grumble and complain about the situation and say, “This is totally unfair. I didn’t do anything to provoke this army. I’ve been serving the Lord all of my life. I’ve come from a family that served the Lord. We’re good stock. This is unfair.”
Ashley: Start declaring all the injustice and start declaring all how it’s woe with me and not their fault. And we’ve been guilty of that. I’ve been guilty of that. This isn’t fair and how comes this has happened and this isn’t fair. And the government this and my work that and all these things. And before you know it, you can end up doing a woe with me and declaring all the negative stuff.
Carlie: Having a pity party.
Ashley: Having a pity party.
Carlie: But he didn’t do that. He went and he sought the Lord and he got instructions from the Lord and what he passed on to his people, I mean, was one of the best pep rallies I’ve ever heard, right? I mean, if a president was to give this kind of pep rally, I think they’d get a standing ovation. But he started declaring the end from the beginning, as it’s saying here in Isaiah 46:10. He said, “Believe in the Lord and you’ll be supported.” We will have the victory is what he was saying. And there are so many examples in the scriptures where people have been speaking out the victory that the Lord is bringing before they’ve even seen it. I know that this has been true in our life as well. We’ve been through times where we’ve had to declare the end from the beginning when we least feel like it.
Because when we really understand, when we get a heavenly perspective… We’ve been talking about this throughout this whole series, so if you’ve missed those programs, you need to catch up. But we need to see the deliverance of the Lord and speak the deliverance of the Lord and be really careful what comes out of our mouth. Because if we really understand that life and death are in our tongue, we want to make sure that we’re speaking life into our situations because the word of God doesn’t return void. And we have the word of God in our mouth.
Ashley: Amen.
Carlie: Amen. The word of God spoken out of our mouth is just as powerful as if God was to speak it Himself.
Ashley: And we know we have the victory anyway. This is the good news. It’s not like we’re faking it till we make it. Some people say, just keep saying it and keep declaring it and eventually it will happen. Now the truth is it’s already happened. We already have the victory. 2,000 years ago for the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus he’s already given us victory over sin. He’s already given us victory over sickness. He’s given us victory over lack. He’s given us victory over turmoil and confusion and fear. He’s already paid the price for those things. I’ve read the back of the book. We win. It’s a done deal. It’s a rigged fight, if you like. It’s a rigged game. We just have to turn up and collect the spoils. And that’s the good news. So when we declare these things, it’s not like we’re declaring something that doesn’t exist. We’re declaring things that do exist in the spirit realm. We’re just making them real in the natural realm. We’re making them real in the world, not just in heaven. And these are the truths. These are done deals.
If you’re a born again believer today, God looks at you and sees you as more than a conqueror. If you’re born again today, you are more than a conqueror. Romans 8:37 says you’re more than conquerors. Jesus paid the price for it and you’re picking up the spoils. You’re getting the benefits. And that’s the truth. You’ve been taken from one kingdom, a kingdom of darkness, a kingdom of defeat, a kingdom of lack, a kingdom of sickness, and you’ve been translated into a kingdom of the son of his love, a kingdom of love and favor and victory and abundance and health and healing. Praise God. That’s the truth about you and who you are in Christ. When you get a picture of who you are in Christ, it changes everything. Praise God. You in Christ have the victory. Amen. So get a picture of who you are in Christ and start speaking that out, start telling yourself, “I’m victorious. I am a world overcomer. All things are possible for me because I believe,” and start believing that. And you’ll see your outside circumstances change as you start change on the inside.
Carlie: Amen. I’m just thinking about this. When I was 18 years old, I’d had so many seizures that I had brain damage. I mean, this word will work for anybody. You don’t have to be a mature believer having been to Bible College and have in-depth study of the word and years under your belt of salvation. I’ve been born again at that point about a year. And I mean, I loved the word, I’d read the word but I was really a baby Christian. I didn’t really understand a lot of the things that we’re talking about here in any kind of depth. But I was 18 years old. I had brain damage from so many seizures and I had lost all feeling from the waist down. So the electrical impulses in my brain were not connecting to all the parts of my body. And they didn’t know whether I was ever going to be able to walk again. Now, no 18-year-old likes to get that diagnosis. But I planned with my church youth group in about three months’ time to go on these outdoor pursuits, retreats.
And we were going to be mountain climbing and canoeing and repelling and mountain biking, all different kinds of outdoor fun stuff. And I was totally excited about it. Part of it, I think, I was 18 years old. I was a thrifty student and I’d already paid my deposit and no plan of the enemy was going to come against me. I wasn’t going to lose that deposit. I was climbing that mountain. And so I had a vision on the inside of me, of me climbing that mountain. And when I got the report from the doctor, there was something on the inside of me that just went off. Even though I didn’t know very much, I just knew that this storm was not from God. I knew because I knew because I knew that God had already…
I mean I already had a picture of me climbing that mountain, that that was God’s plan for me, was to go on that trip and to climb that mountain with my friends and whatever was going on in the natural, whatever the diagnosis was, even though it looked impossible, even though the doctors said it looked horrible, it wasn’t part of me. It was almost like it repelled off of me. And so I started to meditate. I kept on planning. People thought I was crazy, but I kept on planning. I was planning my trip. In my mind, I was never not going. I was always going to be going on that trip. And they’re like, “You can’t go in a wheelchair. You got bigger challenges. You’ve got to learn to walk again. You got bigger things to be worrying about than going and climbing a mountain.” But for me, it wasn’t really even about climbing the mountain. It was about defeating a storm. I just knew that this was a battle that had to be won and it was going to be won on the inside of me.
And it’s only God that could fight that battle for me. There was no one in the medical profession that could fix me. I was too broken. And at 18 years old, I didn’t understand about the power of my words. I kind of did this by accident. But as I was sitting in the house in my wheelchair, everyone was out, the Lord’s like, “You need to believe me for what you can believe me for today and a little bit more.” And I believe that’s a word for somebody. Maybe you’re looking at a storm that’s been hanging around so long it’s become like a family pet, but the Lord’s saying, “Believe me for what you can believe me for today and just a little bit more.” So I started to think about what does that mean? What does that look like on the inside of me? What does my victory look like? Well, my victory looks like walking. And in my lightning fast mind realized that the first step to climbing a mountain is walking, right? If you can’t walk, you’re not going to climb a mountain.
And the first step to walking was standing. So if I could stand and I could walk a step then I could keep on walking and climb the mountain. That was just logic to me. So okay. I maybe can’t believe God to climb a mountain today but I can believe God to bear weight, just to stand. Now, my legs just hanging there like wet fish. I mean, they were useless at that point. But the Lord showed me I need to start speaking. I needed to start speaking out the truth to my legs like my legs had ears. I mean, my natural mind was like, you’re crazy. This isn’t going to work. Your legs don’t don’t hear. But on the inside of me, it’s like, you need to speak out to your legs. Your legs have to listen to you. So I’m like, okay, can’t hurt, right? So I waited till everyone was out of the house because they probably thought I was loopy. And we had a really long hallway in our house and for a couple of days, I’d started practicing, just pushing down on the arms of my wheelchair to the point where I could just stand whilst holding on.
And then one day I got to the point where I felt comfortable with that, speaking to my legs and I was saying, “Legs, this is what we’re going to do today. Legs, you’re going to listen to me.” And I would just set my faith. I was going to speak out and I was going to believe God for just one step at a time. And as I stood there, I pushed myself up at the end of our long hallway and I stood up in my wheelchair and I realized, I don’t have to believe God to walk the whole length of the hallway. I just need to move an inch. If I can move my feet one inch, one foot, then I can move my feet two inches. And so inch by inch, I believe God for what I could believe for right then in that moment and I spoke to my legs. I spoke to my mountain. This is Mark 11:23, 24. I said to the mountain of my legs that weren’t working, “This is what we’re going to do today, legs. We’re going to be strong. We’re going to bear weight. We’re going to move.”
And when my foot started to move one inch, I knew that my other foot could move an inch. And before I knew it, I was moving a whole step at a time. And a few minutes later, I walked 10 steps and I stood there and it wasn’t pretty. You know what? When you believe in God, it doesn’t necessarily look pretty to start with, right? Wasn’t the most graceful walking you’d ever seen, but hey, I was walking, not bad for a paralyzed girl. So I looked back at my wheelchair and I realized I’ve just walked 10 steps. I’m at the end of my hallway by the front door of our house. What am I going to do now? Am I going to walk all the way back and get back in the wheelchair? Or have I got some traction and I’m going to keep going? So I remember my friends were a few miles down the road, playing tennis at the community tennis school. And I’m like, hey, I mean, a few minutes ago, I couldn’t walk a step. I couldn’t bear weight. I couldn’t stand. I was paralyzed. But now I’ve just walked 10 steps. Why can’t I play tennis?
I think on the inside, by speaking the word of God, by speaking the end from the beginning, my faith started to rise on the inside of me. You see Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. When we start speaking the word out, when we start speaking in accordance to God’s promises, our faith starts to rise on the inside of us. So I opened the front door and I carried on walking. I ended up at the tennis court, like two, three miles away. And I played tennis that day. My friends were a little bit surprised to see me. And it wasn’t a really good played game of tennis that I played, but hey, not bad for a girl who was in a wheelchair a few hours earlier. And three months later, I climbed the mountain. And that happened just because I took the word of God at face value and I saw the victory. I saw the deliverance, the other side of the mountain, literally. And I started speaking the word only, declaring the victory while I was still in a place of defeat. And if the word worked for me, it’ll work for anyone.
Ashley: Amen. That’s true. That’s so true. And for some people, it may be a process. I know people that it takes weeks and months. I’ve got a friend who was actually quadriplegic, had an accident and it took him years before he could fully walk and have full function, but they believed God, him and his wife believed God every day. Just for a little bit more, just for a little bit more. And God’s will is for us to be healed instantly every time, I believe. If you read the gospels and see how Jesus did it, Jesus said to Phillip, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father.” So how Jesus dealt with people is how God is dealing with us now. And Jesus healed everybody all the time. So God’s will for you is to be healed instantly, but sometimes due to our heart conditions, due to the circumstances, whatever it is, sometimes it takes us a process to receive that healing. And that’s okay, that’s fine.
God wants you well so He’ll work with you. But start believing God for a little bit more and start declaring those things. Start declaring that you know what? You are the healed of the Lord. Start declaring that you are prosperous. Start declaring that you are free and you have got peace in your mind. Start declaring those things and start believing God to start seeing your circumstances change. God wants you well. God wants you prosperous. God wants good things for you. And he set it up. He’s given you the victory and you can walk in those things if we start believing God, start putting a demand on God’s word, start believing God and take action. In James, it talks about faith without works is dead. What that’s talking about is faith without corresponding actions, faith without doing something is dead. And if we truly believe the word of God, it’s going to start coming out of our mouth, we’re going to start declaring it and we’re going to start acting on it.
If we truly believe what the word says, and we get it in our heart, like Carlie said, faith comes by hearing. The more we hear the word of God, the more we get the word of God in us, the more we sew the word of God in our hearts, the more we’re going to start believing it, the more our faith is going to get activated, and the more we’re going to start wanting to act on it, and we’re going to start acting on that word of God. You might be having a financial struggle. If you believe the word of God, you’re going to believe scripture like Proverbs 11:24 that there’s one who gives, it increases more and you got to think I’m going to start giving, and I’m going to start increasing. There’s promises you’re going to get a hold of that are going to come alive in you and you’re going to want to take action. You’re going to start declaring it with your mouth and you’re going to start taking action, corresponding actions to what you believe.
And I’m telling you, it’s amazing how you start doing that and your circumstances will start changing. It starts with you on the inside. Believe in it and letting your faith come alive and declaring it and then you start acting on it and you’ll see your circumstances change. Like Carlie said, it might be fast, it might not be pretty, it could take some time, but you’ll see your circumstances change. You’re going to win. You’re going to see the victory in this life if you don’t quit. The righteous get up one more time. A winner just gets up one more time. And again, you can get up one more time, the righteous keep getting up. You’re going to get up one more time and you’re going to see your victory. Don’t quit before you see your victory. Amen.
Carlie: Amen. I was just thinking, as you were saying that, the darkest point in the night is right before the dawn. And I just feel like there are people watching this, that you’ve been in a crisis and you feel like you’re in the darkest point of your life, but hold on because this is the point right before the dawn. Don’t quit now. Just don’t quit. Hebrews 6 verse 12 says by faith and patience, we inherit the promises. Hold on. Amen. Because the dawn’s coming. Amen. You will make it through to the other side of the storm. You will. Fear is a huge factor in defeating any kind of storm of life. When Jesus calmed the storm, his disciples in the boat were afraid. They were afraid of the wind and the waves. And he says, “Why are you afraid? Where is your faith? Where is your faith?” Our faith is in Jesus. It’s not in our ability. It’s not even in a doctor’s report, right? It’s not in any outside circumstance. Our faith is in Jesus. And we are always led to triumph in Christ Jesus.
The victory is already predetermined for us. It’s a fixed race. Amen. It’s not fair. We have favor. We’ve already won. I’ve read the end of the book and we win. Amen. So don’t quit. Don’t give up and just be conscious because fear is something, being the enemy of faith, that’ll trip people up. When I was getting up and I was walking down that hallway from my wheelchair, I could have had the opportunity, not even to get up thinking what if I fall and I can’t get up, right? What if I fall? No one’s home. What if I make a horrible mistake? What if I put my faith in believing God for something and it doesn’t work? The fear of the unknown, the fear of failure. Fear will keep you trapped and stop you from moving every time. Let’s look at this in Mark 5. This is Jairus, right? And he’s gotten a bad report. His daughter was dying. In verse 35, this is Mark 5:35, “While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue ruler and said, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?’ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said to the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Do not be afraid, only believe.'”
By keeping our mind stayed upon the Lord, which is what we’ve been talking about through this series, that is the way to conquer fear in the midst of uncertainty. He says, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” And we know the end of the story. He went back to the house and it says, “Why make this uproar and weep? The little girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” He said to her, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately she arose. But in that moment, if the ruler of the synagogue, if Jairus had gotten into fear, it would have stopped that miracle from happening because fear and unbelief hinder the power of God from operating in our life. In the middle of a storm, it is the most natural thing in the world to get into fear. But entering into fear is a choice. It doesn’t come upon us. It is a choice. And we can choose not to enter into fear by keeping our mind stayed upon the Lord. It’s a battle to win the battle in our mind, right?
Joshua and Caleb face this when they face the giants in the Promised Land. In Joshua 1:8, it says, “The book of this law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night.” All the time. When we’re in the middle of the crisis, number one secret to storm survival right here, meditate in the word of God. It is our source of peace, it’s our source of comfort, it’s our source of victory in the middle of despair. Amen. It says, “You shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then,” in other words, as a result of doing these things, “Your way will be made prosperous and you will have good success.” If we want to find ourselves on the other side of the mountain, through the storm, more victorious than we were even going into it, we’ve come through the fire and we don’t even smell of smoke. Amen. Then that comes from meditating on the word day and night.
That word meditate, it doesn’t just mean to sit there in a lotus position. It means to speak it, study it, utter it, and roar it like a lion. We need to take the word of God, plant it in our heart, and speak it out with authority. Amen. That means to speak it as in a commandment. We can speak the word of God into our situation and we will see our situation change. The darkest point in the night is right before the dawn. So if you’re at the darkest point in your life right now, you’re perfectly positioned for victory. Amen.
Ashley: Amen. That’s the truth right there. We’ve seen it so many times in our own life where it seems like we’re at the final stage and there’s nothing else we can do. And we believe God, we start putting our faith in the word of God and we see it turn around. It’s amazing how we’ve seen things turn around so many times. Praise God. And this is a God who took Joseph from the prison, from the dungeon and put him in the palace. This is a God who took people where they caught nothing and then just a few minutes later, had so much fish their boat began to sink. This is a God who rescues people. This is a God who up against the Red Sea, nowhere to go, armies chasing them to kill them, opens the sea up. I mean, God is a God of deliverance. God is a God of supernatural deliverance from storms, from trials, from bad situations. This is His specialty. This is His MO. God loves to take you in a place where you’ve got no hope and you make God your hope and He will deliver you. Praise God. And He will give you the victory. And like Carlie said, you’ll come out the other end of the storm better than when you went in. Praise God. So even though the storm wasn’t from God, He can use it for good, praise God, if you let Him.
Carlie: I want to pray for people.
Ashley: Yeah. Go for it.
Carlie: Amen.
Ashley: Thank you, Jesus.
Carlie: Father, I just thank you. I thank you, Lord, that you are with us in the midst of every storm, in the midst of every battle. Lord, I thank you that we can declare the end from the beginning, that we see the victory where everyone else sees victims. Lord, I thank you that we’re going to come out of these storms, these challenges, and we’re going to look back and we’re going to say, we saw the goodness of God in the land of the living. We take authority right now over every storm, over every challenge, over every weapon that was sent to destroy us and we just call it null and void in Jesus’ name. No weapon formed against you will prosper. No weapon formed against you will prosper. But you know what? You’re going to see the victory right now. We speak victory into the lives of every believer that’s hearing this today in Jesus’ name. We speak healing, health, wholeness, prosperity, deliverance. Lord, I thank you that you make a way where there seems to be no way. Amen.
Ashley: Amen. Amen. Receive that today. That’s a word for you right there. Receive that today. Praise God. And watch your victory unfold. Amen. Praise God. We’re out of time.
